It is indicated for the treatment of patients with essential thrombocythemia who are at high vascular risk and have failed to respond to hydroxyurea and aspirin therapy, have venous thrombosis, or develop intolerable anemia and/or leukopenia following hydroxyurea use. It is also used to treat thrombocytosis associated with myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera, chronic myeloid leukemia, and atypical myeloproliferative/myelodysplastic syndromes when hydroxyurea therapy fails to achieve an adequate response.
